Only 1% of illegal border crossings entering the USA are coming from Canada, yet Donald Trump's tariff proposal seeks to treat Canadian exports the same as Mexican imports in a bid to curb this issue. Smh

It's hard to say. It could be about the optics of being tough on illegal immigration and drugs. It could be about generating tax revenue so as to offset tax cuts for the rich. It could be about bullying other countries into giving him favorable terms. Etc

Why arms? I could see maybe making Canadian oil more expensive to help Russia to an extent.

"Since February 2022, Canada has committed over $19.5 billion in total assistance to Ukraine, including $4.5 billion in military assistance. This includes Leopard 2 main battle tanks, armoured combat support vehicles, anti-tank weapons, small arms, M777 howitzers and associated ammunition" They'll be trying to put a stop to that.

I'm not sure I see how tariffs on Canadian exports to the USA would effect military assistance to Ukraine.

Or fentanyl. I looked it up and only 20kg of fentanyl were seized along the northern border between 2018 and 2022. That's effective 11 pounds per year during that timeframe. Additionally, the vast majority of fentanyl coming across the southern border is being transported through legal ports of entry by US citizens....
