I chuckled, but on the other hand there are people spitting 'gulag' as if they were a place of slightly uncomfortable work, so probably a bit of reflection on those terms would actually be useful.

Gulag is labor camp, concentration camp is where you had no trial, but could also be forced labor.

The point is that it was for the most part a tool of political repression, it's not like people were sent there because some important work actually had to be done. It's quite similar to the extermination through labor logic the Nazis employed.
