Maybe we could encourage people to cast more about what their bookish interests are and what kind of reader they are.

It may feel out off place because right now the focus is very much on the books themselves, but even recommendations can become more meaningful when you know who is behind the recommendation.

I generally try to read things that get into the nature of what it is to be human and how we see and interact with the world. I have a background that spans biology and neuroscience, business, UX and crypto, particularly decentralized data. This gives me a deep appreciation for decentralization... including our minds.

So I read a lot on neuroscience, so much good coming out lately. Some of my favorites are: Being You, A Brief History of Intelligence,  Thousand Brains, Master and His Emissary. Also read a lot on Daoism and meditation. I generally ready fiction at night and non-fiction in AM and during day.

I think mostly I need characters that are a little bit funny, not necessarily on purpose, but quirky and different.  I need to laugh at or with a new worldview. I don't want to dive into depression with characters.

100 Years of Solitude is probably my favorite novel. No shortage of quirky characters, all tied together with a nice, neat ribbon.

I finally got around to reading The Hero with a Thousand Faces last year, non-fiction but deals with all types of myths and characters from all over human history. Gotta say, if there's one book every human should read, it may be that one.

On fiction side it seems so hard to find something really good. I find past a certain point it can just feel annoying to be in many other characters' heads. But when you find a good one, it's really good. Enjoyed the Japanese epic Musashi recently.
