right now - even if your app had a differentiating feature - all users would be forced back to warpcast for private comms

that makes it extremely difficult to retain daily users bc a large driver of churn is entirely out of alt clients' hands

Wave a magic wand and assume DCs are integrated and work well (both non-trivial), you still need a differentiated feature.

tbf once nook removed the custom feeds/shelves it was no longer differentiated really 

main point here is - give me a social media client that doesn’t have direct messaging. how can any client that is optimizing for social connection succeed if users can’t message each other? or if those conversations are fractured across multiple clients with all their own DC infra

No chance for me. I had nook installed on my home bar but gradually stopped opening it because I *always* had to open warpcast for dcs.

That said, even once interoperable undifferentiated clients will die anyway. There will be something else pre protocol, like channel moderation or an actual compet. adv.

If its a warpcast clone - I would agree

If the context is different enough idk if a separate messaging system is the biggest killer

I'd say no. DCs are a nice to have. I don't think many are coming to Warpcast for the DC feature.

Depends what you think an alt client is but with my broad definition it not only doesn't matter but is a total red herring.
