Depends what you think an alt client is but with my broad definition it not only doesn't matter but is a total red herring.

can you expand on why you think it's a red herring/a distraction?

ah the intention here is not to compete with warpcast

it is to remove churn of alt clients due to not having DCs 

which my gut tells me will be quite high even with differentiating factors...

if you're building a community/connection oriented social client - how will it succeed if users can't privately contact each other?

yes you can build out your own DC infra but then what happens when you want to contact users of warpcast when you're a user of an alt client?

I mean that competing with merkle on features for anything that looks remotely like reddit or Twitter is, has been, and for the foreseeable future will be a losing game. So if you're blaming DCs for lack of adoption you're probably in for a rough realization once they go to the protocol level. And if you're not competing on the Twitter side, then DCs don't really bother you and you're doing a good job of "playing another game" or creating your own "cozy corner"

That being said, excited to see what new ideas get cooked up once they're live, because an actual TG/discord killer would be a heater of a project
