potentially dumb question but can someone explain the logic of “subletting” your apartment out for 2 weeks while you’re on vacation? 

like is rent really that high or are people really that cash strapped or what?

people are broke af dude and rent is hella expensive

sometimes you can rent your place for 2 weeks for the price of a full month normally 

and if you’re traveling you’re likely paying for accommodation there too so ”double rent”

a large majority of the population is spending over 50% of their income on rent, “expensive” is a relative term and people might not have a choice of where they live because of job, family, or other obligations/life situations 

why doesn’t everyone in NYC just move to New Jersey or outside of Manhattan/brooklyn? rent there is ridiculously, disgustingly high with people paying over $1,000 for a literal closet 

how would you respond if you lost your source of income and could no longer afford to live in Venice or Southern California, and you couldn’t move in with friends or family? would you be happy and content with having to move to a rural area where you don’t know anyone just so you can have more affordable rent?

one last comment lol but this question really reminds me of the question “why do poor people buy nice TVs and cars when they’re always complaining about living paycheck to paycheck?”

people deserve to be happy and content and enjoy life regardless of their financial situation.

people deserve to have a nice roof over their heads that feels like home. 

folks may choose to scrimp on other things (eating out, buying processed food, going to concerts) so they can have nice things and still enjoy life (i.e. going on vacations or having a really nice apt that you may have to sublet when you travel)

why live in such an expensive place (apartment or city) then?
