potentially dumb question but can someone explain the logic of “subletting” your apartment out for 2 weeks while you’re on vacation? like is rent really that high or are people really that cash strapped or what?

people are broke af dude and rent is hella expensive sometimes you can rent your place for 2 weeks for the price of a full month normally and if you’re traveling you’re likely paying for accommodation there too so ”double rent”

2 weeks is arguably not worthwhile for the overhead of logistics on all of it but more generally I am a huge proponent of using sublets to solve the double rent problem to allow people to live in multiple places they can call home throughout the year, something more like 9 months Miami 3 months nyc for example

another question: what landlord would allow this? I can't remember a lease I've signed that would allow me to 'sublet for 2 weeks'

i think rent is high enough in some cities to justify it, and it's zero-downside to try

I would do it if it was someone I know or friend of friend that I trust. Put it this way—if I went to Hawaii for two weeks and spent $1k and that entire trip could be paid for just by letting a friend crash, yeah absolutely I'd do it.

People are cash-strapped and rent is out of control. I can't even afford a one-bedroom apt in the area I live on my salary. I live in a basement suite in my friend's house, and trying to figure out a way to have a better income. Main reason that I don't sublet like that when I travel is that I feel weird to have strangers stay in my home. I did have a friend stay in my apartment while I was gone once, but I didn't ask him to pay for it. It was as a favor as he was in-between places.

rent is incredibly high, especially in London. I know a couple of my friends who do home exchanges. This is a way to have a place for vacation for free and build trust since you exchange houses instead of renting from one side

i once sublet an apartment for 5 months and it was awesome. you can often charge more than your rent and make a good profit. i’m not sure i’d do it for 2 weeks unless it was a regular thing with someone you know

Back in the day, we would sublet our place while we traveled (usually for a month or two) and the extra margin we'd get from subletting would cover most of the trip costs. This is when rent was a fair bit cheaper (early 2010s) and before Airbnb got expensive.

I don't even like it when the neighbor knocks and can see inside my apartment. Creepy lady damn near steps inside every time. I can't imagine letting someone live in it for 2 weeks. Nope, not for me.

When I lived in an apartment in Hoboken where rents were comparable to Manhattan, I never ever did that and I was gone for weeks at a time on business. Ain't no way I'm doin' that.

Super common in NYC where rent is $4-6k just for a 1 bedroom with no amenities like an in unit washer or dryer 🤷🏻‍♀️

I have wondered if swapping places with someone who lives in the city I want to spend time in would work...but would have to be a month minimum
