but yeah fully agree! it's crazy how we're introducing all of these customization features that we grew up with in the early internet

geocities websites, blogs, myspace top 8 and profile songs, neopets custom profiles, aol instant messenger chat folders, etc

why did we get rid of this lol

there's always some line about the tradeoffs with customization. there's this idea that users are dumb af now, when really high-quality UX is what's in short supply. perhaps it's ad-driven social media, mobile-first experiences, or something else, but these things used to be table stakes. and not complicated.

customization is the quickest path to delight imo. it's what makes the internet feel tangible, tactile, and fun. let me put my hands on the thing you want me to use every day lmao
