wtf is going on with the air industry this is actually insane $170 US extra for this on a $200 flight my parents just booked a flight also where they would have to pay $200pp extra if they wanted their pair of tickets to be together on a flight and not split up…

had a similar situation, booked 2 roundtrip tickets to mexico city from los angeles. economy didn't include assigned seats, you had to pay extra for seats. one round trip ticket in economy at the time was ~$700 with seat. without seat it was ~$400. if all seats were selected at check-in, i would have to wait for next available flight at the airport on standby. having said all of that, the same flight went down to $350 with seat leading up to the flight date 🫠

wait... they were selling a $400 ticket that didn't actually guarantee you a seat on that flight you bought a ticket for?

yup! happens often in my experience depending on airline and/or its overbooked. so you buy economy ticket but economy seats are sold out so you have to pay for “premium” seats If it’s overbooked and no seats then you get the dreaded “check in at counter” message the day of check in 💀

how is this allowed to happen lmao it is wild to me that you purchase a legitimate ticket but at the end of the day all it really is is an IOU that the airline may or may not fulfill at the time you need it
