Mao had foreign support via the soviets, (wouldn't have succeded without them) and cuban revolution was an intra-elite affair. A lot of the leaders were from wealthy and elite circles. In todays time it would be like the sons and daughters of cia directors, congressmens and billionaires leading a revolution, (with most likely foreign support).

revolutions suck and they rarely work. You usually would need some sort elite support for it to ever have success. Otherwise its just a peasant rebellion that will get stomped on.
