That's the case for 50% of the English words. It's always weird to listen to well educated, native English speakers not knowing how to pronounce an English word they want to use. That's not the case in other languages. For example, in Greek, if you know how to read, you can pronounce correctly everything you read, even if you don't understand what it means.
