I started using it simply as a free ngrok alternative with 
`tailscale funnel localhost:3000`

slowly and organically it's taken over a bunch of different tools and services

Can also install on your Apple TV to use as an exit node while traveling

this was a huge selling point for me. I'm setting this up for my family so they don't have to worry about apps and sites not working when abroad

that probably tells you how far I've gotten (still getting started)

my journey so far is: installed iOS app, installed macOS app, installed NixOS service, connected all to my free tailscale account, and used funnels a bunch. Nothing yet beyond that

I went through the pain of setting up wireguard on my opnsense and was thinking I should switch to tail scale, but it somehow seemed even more convoluted.

How are you using it for other services, locally hosted and tail scale directly set up on the server? And what does the url look like for the funnel?

honestly just download the ios app and from there you'll see the light. I'm also a tailscale rookie right now so if you download it and get going, we can help each other

Have a recommendation on starting with it? Just Google a getting started guide?

neither did anyone from my work and I was pleasantly surprised when I found it while going through cli commands. I found so many other incredible goodies in it. Might warrant a nice blog post

install app on phone & mac

install cli on remote machine/s & start with `tailscale up --ssh`

now you can ssh into any machine to any machine within your ts netwotk. Make sure to connect with tailscale command instead of directly running ssh

finally go through the getting started guide & harden your walls (crucial)
