Why do so many people not value moral character as the most important thing in leadership? How is it not obvious?

Yes in the short term, especially if it’s a small group of people being led. 

But imo it always comes with long term costs that either those people have to pay, or their children, or people outside of the group. And the costs could have been avoided. 

ie: cynical, short-termism for self interest

History shows moral character is not necessary for effectively leading people.

I would change the word from morality to ethical.

I recently read: our young man learned from football coaches instead of civics professors.

evangelicals were saying this in the 90s and everyone said they were just obsessed with sex (probably true to some extent).

now they've largely abandoned this stance and we're all wishing they hadn't.
