bluesky is gaining mindshare because they found PMF with users who want to be surrounded by people who (mostly) agree with them. it’s political affiliation, not vision.

I’m very skeptical they’d be growing as fast as they are if the sales pitch was “bluesky is twitter but more politically left content moderation”

that’s why people are joining from twitter, which they now see as right wing coded due to Elon same thing with users defecting from meta “because of AI” which has become right wing coded how else do you explain that Bluesky’s user base is overwhelmingly left wing, a group that has never previously expressed much interest in decentralized anything, whether social apps or otherwise?

There is rarely a single reason behind any decision someone makes. I’ve been interested in decentralized social since 2017. For people who recognize wealth is power and are tired of signing up for a new social app every couple years, there is deeper ideological interest in bluesky beyond US politics imo.

yeah I hear you and agree that there’s nuance to how people make decisions personally I’m seeing people I know on IG and FB saying that they’re ditching Meta “because of AI” and they stopped using Twitter like a year ago “because of Elon.” they have pretty much no idea that Bluesky is “decentralized” or what that means. they mostly understand it in negation relative to twitter or meta. and that’s setting aside some of the nuance of their positioning, like the fact that they’re VC-funded or that content posted there is much more likely to be fodder for AI vs. twitter.

I’ll concede politics is the main reason for its growth and maybe that’s bullish for FC long term. There are many politically center or apolitical people who don’t like the general atmosphere of twitter and might like it here.

to be clear I think Bluesky has value way beyond this framing of left vs. right. that’s one of the things I find frustrating about this situation. BS has been built in a much more open way and that corresponds to many of my deeply held values, but I don’t believe that’s the primary reason users are joining atm.
