Explored Bluesky a bit today. according to their docs the relay is just an optimization for ux. i'm more bluesky curious after reading. i used to think a blockchain was necessary for the identity layer but less sure now.

I don’t know enough about the aggregation and relay process, but if you run your own relay, you’d have to aggregate all the siloed data yourself, right?

IMO the best part of blockchain identities is programmable security (social recovery, etc). "Just relegate to DNS for anyone who cares" is not as effective or equitable. Plus the censorship/availability properties are nice too.
