I look forward to the day where I’m notified about new content by writers I subscribe to via wallet notifications instead of email notifications. 

Which wallet is working on something like this?

I guess Paragraph would have to directly collab with MetaMask or another popular wallet in order to integrate notifications for newsletters using XMTP? 

Or someone could make a new mobile app (wallet) that uses XMTP for delivering notifications for platforms that allow user auth via wallets.

I haven't heard of anyone working on this. I've chatted with some of the XMTP folks about on-chain newsletter delivery in the past; that'd be neat to implement, just a matter of prioritization

Lots of stuff for me to unpack here but sounds like you’ve got a good grasp on how to make this work. May I ask what the progress has been on building this?
