Notice how Alawites formed almost the entire leadership of the Syrian Arab Army under Assad. Once again, we see why these modern Arab militaries suck. All their officer corps are nepotistic and not meritocratic. Bashar wasn't holding off Israel from Syria at all.

You won't find me defending Assad or Hussein, but it's depressing that it seems like both were somewhat keeping the respective religious minorities in their countries safe, i.e. Chaldeans and Sunnis in Iraq, Alawis and Shi'is in Syria; overthrow sees religious majority reprisal.
