I've been using Farcaster since @dwr onboarded me back in Fall 2021. I was very pleasantly surprised to see the bump in DAUs / interest once frames were launched. That being said - Why did frames make Farcaster pop? Did Farcaster just reach critical mass already and this was a catalyst? Or were Frames the kind of ...

it wasn't Frames, it was it opening for US market. Frames was at the right place at the right time.

Frames brought a lot of attention and interest in trying Farcaster out. Most likely the team made the decision to cover the signups cost to reduce friction for the flood of new users caused by the surge in interest due to Frames. Being able to buy cookies with crypto or mint an NFT in a frame brought interest.

I agree with @theodormarcu that frames are old tech. However, combining them with passing the cryptographically signed user info to the frame server and FC being built on an open protocol tied to EVM accounts, make possible certain experiences that aren't on a permissioned, web2 app these days.
