I've been using Farcaster since @dwr onboarded me back in Fall 2021. I was very pleasantly surprised to see the bump in DAUs / interest once frames were launched. 

That being said - Why did frames make Farcaster pop? Did Farcaster just reach critical mass already and this was a catalyst? Or were Frames the kind of ...

... innovation that was just not possible on social media beforehand?

Both answers feel inadequate. Farcaster has been attracting retentive users for a while. And Facebook invented the OpenGraph tags that enabled Frames!

there is no better marketing than making people money
and $degen has done just that

that said, the experience of a (STABLE!) twitter/reddit-like platform with baked in on-chain experiences has been incredibly compelling to experience! (as a new farcaster user)

I think traditional social media inherently deprioritizes links so strongly that people are unable to truly express themselves. 

With frames, as I understand it, people can bring in glimpses of other sites directly, like peeling back a layer to reveal the bigger picture of the world beneath.

imho a big part of Frames' success is  because of its versatility and the urgent need for web3 teams to have distribution + survive.

Frames not only enables founders/builders to have an interactive, relatively frictionless user/value capture funnel, it also serves as a complementary product offering for B2B builders.

Feels like a mixed bag of frames, twitter suck, and the right folks hoping over

Writing a longer post around this, but this has been my take even prior to the record DAU. 
In addition to being an onchain alternative to Xitter & Reddit, people are also fatigued w/ Discord. As WC continues to provide tools for onchain communities it will continue to be a viable alternative for people to be a part of
