Why would someone trust DeepSeek with questions and search queries if we can't trust TikTok? It's cool that they were able to get such a model built in a more affordable way but unless it's significantly better than alternatives, why would anyone use it?

Because it IS significantly better and dramatically cheaper AND the techniques + weights are open sourced so people are building on it and fine tuning the base. It also provides a whole new approach to achieving the state of the art.

gpt 4o-like performance at 3% of the price is good enough for me If data privacy / territoriality concerns exist, then it's a no go

run local an option if privacy is the concern. for model bias, yeah for sure. tho that’s the water we’re swimming in with all these things

for one because it's open source, unlike "Open" AI and maybe more importantly it's a lot cheaper which makes it more accessible.

open source alone is such a huge incentive. if you add to it the fact it performs as well as o1 at a fraction of the cost then you get why everyone’s going crazy for it
