i have tried to adopt a pluralized form of 'data' but it is too damn confusing to my brain. i'm giving up. data is singular in my writing and that's that.

i'm gonna argue that english is a living language and sometimes we collectively decide to change something that doesn't follow the rules, but is more comfortable and data is one, so yea, i agree

but some (like style manuals) insist on the old fashioned usage of it as a plural noun.

Thanks a lot for sharing this article, I love deep dives on a very specific topic :) It never occurred to me that considering data a synonym of information can be limiting in a mathematical context, I now understand why the plural is considered to be better for scientific publications.

Following the rabbit hole: data comes from "dare", which means "to give" as in "something given as true".

To adopt a pluralized form of data, you could imagine information as an uncountable blob, but when someone grabs a drop of it and gives it to you, it becomes countable data 😂
