i have tried to adopt a pluralized form of 'data' but it is too damn confusing to my brain. i'm giving up. data is singular in my writing and that's that.

i'm gonna argue that english is a living language and sometimes we collectively decide to change something that doesn't follow the rules, but is more comfortable and data is one, so yea, i agree

but some (like style manuals) insist on the old fashioned usage of it as a plural noun.

Isn’t it uncountable? Like “information” 🙂

I used to write “the data shows…” despite knowing full well that it’s the plural form of “datum”.

But then I had to learn and comply with the APA writing style for my PhD, and now it’s drilled into my head that I should write “the data show…”.
