Okay, so what actually makes sense is mm/dd, just like we do hh:ss for time. More general to more precise units. However, sometimes when we say "September 29th" we're like "oh shit, I guess I should say what year it is too". yyyy-mm-dd is ideal, sorts well etc, but no one cares what year it is until it's too late.
