Towns uses a (lightly forked) Matrix Protocol underneath.

Which is very flexible and _could_ have a number of different UIs on top.

But it’s a tough user experience and they have to glue blockchains onto it too.

Exactly!  I did go down a bit of that "history of decentralized social" wikipedia rabbit hole the end of last week.. OStatus, GNU Social, Libre.fm, identi.ca, diaspora ..  and was like what was I doing the last 10yrs that I didn't know all of this stuff was happening??? 😅

Many of them - like Matrix Protocol and ActivityPub - have been around for a while (like 5 years) but are now moving into a phase where people build specialized apps and networks on top.
