Towns uses a (lightly forked) Matrix Protocol underneath. Which is very flexible and _could_ have a number of different UIs on top. But it’s a tough user experience and they have to glue blockchains onto it too.

Many of them - like Matrix Protocol and ActivityPub - have been around for a while (like 5 years) but are now moving into a phase where people build specialized apps and networks on top. Everyone’s look to grab the crown of “next big social protocol”

unfortunately we won't be able to stick with matrix (despite our hopes) it assumes that all nodes are trusted. that won’t work for a decentralized protocol. many contributions by HNT to the project got merged & even more (around that topic) hv been effectively rejected. so we moved to forge our own future

Exactly! I did go down a bit of that "history of decentralized social" wikipedia rabbit hole the end of last week.. OStatus, GNU Social, Libre.fm, identi.ca, diaspora .. and was like what was I doing the last 10yrs that I didn't know all of this stuff was happening??? 😅
