for anyone feeling discouraged about the future of crypto, now is a really good time to re-read @matthuang's "The Casino on Mars" 10/10 read https://www.paradigm.xyz/2023/09/casino-on-mars

Do useful things necessarily have to take off quickly Seems to be conflating multiple things Eg many foss projects imo like ladybird and vlc and gimp are v useful Different q abt market penetration

VLC and Gimp are useful by themselves. Onchain DNS and Venmo alternatives are only useful in so far you have the cooperation of enough people to drive adoption. Your ens would be useless if no one but you cared about it.

Hmm icwym Maybe not great examples... I think for example ens is useful to crypto users and devs (and has adoption within apps) I think lending markets are useful in providing stablecoin yield based on demand for leverage I think games can be fun (prolly not useful) see eg parallel or duper

I don’t think ENS is a meaningful advancement that crypto has brought. It’s a better UX that brings it closer to what people expect from web2. I get the unruggable nature is good but most people don’t experience getting their name rugged.

Ye i think meaningful advancement is a high hurdle that even many existing web2 apps fail to meet But i think it does (as well as eg lending markets onchain et al) meet the bar for usefulness (to a subet of people)?
