I actually disagree with this POV. The most enduring happiness is becoming who you want to be. The idea we should be okay the way we are always seemed crazy to me. https://warpcast.com/ted/0xe17d45db

Aka the journey, aka live in the moment. You're always becoming who you want to be, that's the default state. (the revealed preference version not the stated one.) I think you and Ted are saying the same thing. That's my interpretation anyway.

I'll chip in: IMHO, enduring happiness comes from continuously approaching who you want to be.

not what this is saying being someone that you aren't in service of some future gains is the top way in which people make themselves miserable

Imo there is a balance; some might not get the "who you want to be" part. One might never be happy if they have only eccentric goals. However, life becomes stagnant without pursuing, learning, improving and challenging yourself.

the most enduring happiness comes from letting go of the idea of happiness. we get to spend time. with each other. doing things. just being in the world. pursue goals or ideas. or choose not to. we get to spend time. which is polar opposite of not being allowed to spend time. everything else is noise.

That's one kind of personality, you're another kind of personality. Different people feel "happy", whatever that is, under different conditions.
