Is it wrong/unethical/extractive/in bad taste for companies to require applicants to produce valuable work "for free" when applying? Are there exceptions? E.g. write an investment thesis, do competitor research, put together a pitch deck, prototype a new feature, etc.

yea i think these things should probably be paid if it's potentially creating value for the business investment thesis a bit different maybe, if i'm like a hedge fund asking applicants to pitch a stock, that seems like a standard type of question to assess their abilities/way of thinking but something closer to a work trial should def always be paid and is a bad signal if it isn't

this is tricky - I think if the work could be leveraged / used by the business in any way it should be paid. I think work trails if you can do them, is a great way to solve for this. If it is more in the abstract; while I think it would be nice to pay a candidate for their work, it is, at the end of the day, the company's prerogative to have a process they want and the candidate wants a job there.

if the work is directly related to your core business, i think it's only right to pay that person for their time i like doing a work trial before hiring someone, and we just agree on a time period for the trial and they sign our boilerplate consulting agreement for that time

i think it’s fine as long as they don’t use the created materials of people they didn’t hire

Capstone projects in the final semesters exist for a reason, if the employer want to assess the skill of someone seeking employment those projects are enough to gauge the skill set. Anything apart from this should be rewarded, however current job market is so bleak many employers are exploiting individuals who seek employment. Such a sad state of affairs (

i guess i'd think about this on the applicant's basis - enough prior proof of work should in the best cases be enough along w verbal interview but when it's dicey, i guess being upfront about it & requesting candidate for a new proof of work is totally fine ; the candidate can choose to refuse...
