Are there any ideologically driven people involved in Solana? My impression is it’s pure mercenary: decentralization and open source are not taken seriously.

Why do you think decentralization is not taken seriously?

I’m not well informed on Solana, but my impression is that the architectural decisions are made to support short term low cost transactions far above and beyond long term decentralized validation. Happy to learn where this impression is incorrect

If Solana can reach 10k truly independent full-nodes spread across 100 countries, is that decentralized enough? For dapps like Farcaster where much of the action is off-chain, perhaps Ethereum is a better choice. But for heavy on-chain footprints with smart contract composability, Solan is the way.

Also to take into consideration is the hardware requirements and the fact that people are essentially encouraged to run it in the cloud. 10k validators spread out is great but what if 90% is running in 12 cloud providers. Easy Chokepoint for nation states.

Any profit motivated validator will run their system in the cloud no matter the hardware requirements. Enthusiasts are great but imo blockchain design should assume an adversarial environment. In some sort of worldwide crackdown, I’ll give that Ethereum might be more resilient – for that I’m glad it exists.
