It lost me a bit towards the very end, but I really enjoyed The Leftovers. Might not quite scratch the campy small-town itch. First couple seasons of Search Party was good mindless watching, too.

A lot of the "monster of the week" episodes of X-Files have this quality. I'd look up "top 10 episodes of x-files" on Google and watch whatever comes up there. Another tack is to watch all the episodes written by Darin Morgan.
