lead climbing! there are two types of sport climbing - top rope and lead. top rope has a rope pre-installed. with lead, you bring the rope with you and clip in on the way up gyms require you take separate certification tests to do either of them top rope is much easier + safer, but when you climb outdoors, someone needs to “lead” the route in order to set up a top rope anchor for the other climbers

what are they grading you on? Do you just have to get to the top or is it more like a driver's test with safety procedures you need to observe correctly?

yeah, they compare it to a driver's license test since it's a lot easier to injure yourself as either climber or belayer they want to see you're super mindful of best practices and confident in your ability to do them eg as a climber if the rope is behind your leg when you fall, it'll flip you upside down. or if you clip in the wrong direction, the rope can undo the latch on your way down belaying is much higher-stakes for both climber and belayer, too, since falls have a lot of momentum and big ones will pull you up the wall among other fun things! 🤠
