“Timelines”

A term that makes devs all over the world shudder.

Over the past year, I’ve replaced timelines and milestones with “sequencing” whenever I sit down to make a plan.

It’s nice to share out which order I’m planning to work in. Visibility without arbitrary time commitments leads to better work

how do you usually like going about identifying & addressing when things are taking too long?

milestones > timelines

but if things are taking too long it must be addressed

scrum, agile, kanban, etc. are all codified project management / project execution methodologies that have many merits to them! the reason I introduce the term "sequencing" is because it is not inextricably linked with a particular methodology. fwiw, I first tried to rebrand "timeline" and "milestones" with a team of 7, because I recognize it's important to be very selective when introducing new terms. eventually, i introduced "sequencing" after carefully considering the fact that some words carry insurmountable connotations. for example, "timeline" evokes a negative response and implies a due-date. "milestone" captures success criteria but doesn't necessarily capture ordering. "sequence" implicitly talks about order of execution and doesn't carry emotional baggage the same way the other terms do, so my teammates were more willing to adopt it :)

changing words shouldn't be necessary, but you understood the point of e.g. Scrum.

I like the idea of planning workflow in a way that feels better. Timelines are stressful and I'm so over adding unnecessary stess to my life!
