it’s occurred to me that there’s a huge difference between teaching and instructing, and i have a sense we’ve recently leaned too heavily on instruction in areas that deserve to be taught instead

imagine having a reading disability, so tiktok biases towards serving you text-heavy content? as an edge-case magnet, algo feeds have shown me implicit assumptions made by engineers. e.g. avg amount of time spent (in milliseconds!!) can indicate subconscious "revealed preference," but what about the false positives?!

this reply (and thread) has been incredibly thought provoking. it leaves open question in my mind: how exactly can we reintroduce critical thinking, embracing of people as they change opinions over time, and making art & are there emerging opportunities to take action and effect change?

I’ve been noticing that more people have become fearful of expressing themselves freely online, especially in the past 10 years or so. Have you noticed this too? Either way, why do you think this is?

Social capital runs on proof of work, proof of memory, proof of β€œcare”. Social networks that advertise convenience are at odds with this, and devalue the interactions. I believe this is why we’ve seen a fragmentation of networks and a migration to chat & private comms from public feeds (eg FB/IG) wdyt?

β€œTimelines” A term that makes devs all over the world shudder. Over the past year, I’ve replaced timelines and milestones with β€œsequencing” whenever I sit down to make a plan. It’s nice to share out which order I’m planning to work in. Visibility without arbitrary time commitments leads to better work

Functional knowledge cannot be acquired without effectively balancing β€œwhy?” and β€œhow?” Here’s the kicker: everyone has a different optimal operating ratio

is this a hot take? i believe periodic pruning of follows is the *best* way to keep your feed great. the platform that will beat context collapse is the one that figures out how to model how relationships "breathe" and help users accept that not every connection is permanent

There's no such thing as a "right way" to build. When working with others, there is such a thing, though, as the most "accepted" style. Turns out, even coding is all about social capital despite the build-in-a-dark-windowless-cave stereotype

"edge-case magnet" – someone who constantly gets stuck between the cracks of processes, tech systems, etc. Where getting through life feels like a never-ending string of paper cuts

I was heavily motivated by unconscious bias to find a paper elaborating on the potential for unconscious bias being adaptive My main takeaway is it can be advantageous at times to believe something you’ve yet to prove / yet to make real https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10670-020-00252-1
