Why would McLaren not want Norris to win being 2nd in the championship? Have they given up on catching Verstappen already? Weird to give 1st to your 2nd driver, no?

They gave preference to Lando on the last stop to ensure a 1-2 finish. As part of that choice, Lando needed to give it back to Piastri. It's not that they don't believe in Lando, but team points are more important than driver points. Unfortunately, it created an absolute cluster because Lando was obviously faster the last stint. At the end of the day, Lando shouldn't have bottled up the start and he wouldn't have been in that position.

This one will really sting if the world championship is within 7 points.

It was a moral decision. Which might not be the right decision. Def Norris has a better chance of getting close to Max.

Very selfish imo. The team manager wants to say he got 2 drivers to pole and took a rookie to his first win in first year. It’s all about management in this case, no good reason otherwise

Let’s see what they make out of it the following races. If Lando can catch up nevertheless all will say it was smart to keep the team motivated. If he misses him by a bit in the end the opposite will happen :D
