This is just so depressing to read. I know it’s true and I know it’s basically everything. I’m 24; this is the generation I will live with. This bit in particular hit me, because it’s EXACTLY how I feel sometimes when I go on dates, have the joy of being presented an interesting topic, and I get the cliche talking points back.

If the illiteracy and passive consumption of short-form entertainment trends are truly generational, or even multi-generational until some future backlash happens and the pendulum swings back, then I wonder what the implications are for our democracies. We need an informed electorate to apply common sense and critical thinking, to reason by analogy using lessons from history, and to apply an informed framework of ethics — all this to keep those in power in check. If the electorate is functionally incapable of playing that role, there isn’t much hope —nor need, to be honest— for “power to/of the people”. We’ll just appoint an intelligentsia class to rule over others. Perhaps we need a huge solar flare or EMP event to fry all our phones for a few months and force a general detox
