Sharding experiments are needed at all layers of the stack to scale. 

A full implementation of what you're describing could be used to leave out spammers entirely from your computer's resources too ⚡️

Also been thinking about something like this recently but for the purposes of backing up peoples history and offering a way to “reinstate” that history if they lose it due to storage limits or expiration.

that's an awesome idea - I'd definitely use it! good use case might be to define a scope of interest (set of FIDs, set of casts, set of channels, etc) and pull all data needed to capture the part of the graph around that scope

Only sync the messages from users you follow, kinda like the fediverse works. Good idea!
