I love this dude! He's from Ohio and his hometown declared the day of his return a holiday and threw him a parade! I posted about him in /ohio a few weeks ago.

the "drunken construction worker" getting called out in the overview sounds like an interesting story

I read his book as a young adult — my intro to travel / adventure writing and I credit it with getting me interested in long form travel. I remember it being really good until maybe the last 20% which was a long slog across Australia then crossing the US which after all he’d been through was relatively uneventful.
