It feels way less fun to explore. It's all gated communities now.

"Channels are walled gardens"

1. Everyone can read and reply to channel casts

2. Most people appear above the fold when replying

3. The cast data is on the protocol, you're able to build a client or another experience with it that you think is better

4. There are plenty of channels experimenting with token and NFT gating.

5. I'll repeat: *there is no distribution boost to casting in a channel*. It's strictly if you want to take the time to start building relationships in that community (which you can start today by replying to any cast in the channel).

6. A generic topic / hashtag like #ai, #food, #founders is not a community. It's an attempt at boosting distribution. And we're specifically not boosting distribution. So casting in your home feed (to your followers) will get you the same distribution to people who already choose to follow you.

I know dozens of people exclusively through (building) Farcaster that I've met here and have never met in-person.

I don't understand the point of channels now. Subreddits are pages for people interested in a kind of symbols to discuss those symbols, and then possibly connect offline.

Reddit and Warpcast are screens for looking at and discussing symbols. They never have and never will compete against IRL. IRL >> screens. I don't think many people who matter want to "hang out" online. We want to discuss symbols and meet others around the world who are interested in the same kind of symbols. But would always opt for IRL over online. So every bit of friction added to online symbol discussion deters me.

I mean, I could be wrong. It may have just not clicked for me yet. I dunno. Appreciate your thoughts.
