In most cases, I agree with this. General topic channels don't work well in the new model. They were built an era of channels as hashtags. There will be some exceptions, but will require a lot of work from the channel owner and moderators to make sure a large channel becomes and stays a community.

Disagree — larger topic channels should have a place. And channels should be that place where I can go and look at one topic in one place. /food is a great example — I don’t really want my home feed to be all pix of food. But I don’t mind that the food channel is exactly that and I can look there when I want. /screens and /music are others like that — when I’m looking for recommendations for those things it’s easy to go to those channels and see what people are posting. I’m not going to necessarily see those in my home feed especially from people I’m not following, but it might be very useful information, especially with the nook cast action.

Generic channels should be as open as possible and be similar to what default subreddits were like imo Would be kinda interesting if one day there were “mega channels” that had their own storage and were free for people to cast in too

Agreed. I wanna cast about AI and my old casts in /ai got lots of engagement. Now I go to cast, not a member so can't post, so just fallback to the main feed. And get low engagement. 🤷‍♂️ It's an odd adjustment period at the moment.

I think some themes can transcend the new model, such as /itookaphoto There’s a community through photographic expression that leads me to appreciate all levels of skill ✨

100% good hosts are good hosts and I look forward to seeing large channels with great hosts moderating and keeping the conversation moving.

I think it remains to be seen what these large channels will be used for. My gut tells me they still have value, the community will just function completely differently than a “cozy corner”. This is where I think some experimental permissionless systems could be used to create interesting content. Off-the-dome example: imagine /screens being used to understand the top picks from Farcasters on a weekly/monthly/seasonal basis. Instead of a cozy corner it turns into a wisdom-of-crowds generator.

does it still make sense in this model for channel names to be non-fungible if someone can just squat a topic and not build a community there? perhaps anyone should be able to use any name in parallel and they are differentiated by the owner and moderators

awesome that you released such a breaking change after seeing the entire community engage in speculative investments of these channels via fan tokens and lock them away for months... really cool of you
