I've been soaking them in distilled water, which I change daily. Apparently the water displaces some of the minerals in the embedded mud and patina. I brush them with a stiff toothbrush for a few minutes on each side once per day, occasionally using toothpicks when there are bits that look like they'll flake off. It can take months apparently? This is my first time exploring the process.

There is a storm and our power is out. And I’m huddling next to the window looking at muddy Roman coins in the remnants of sunlight.

Yes indeed! I have been soaking them in distilled water, which I change daily, and have been scrubbing them with a stiff toothbrush. Slow but steady incremental progress. I guess it _should_ take time to remove thousands of years of mud and patina. Wild to imagine the journey they have had.

eBay! There are various sellers offering them by the handful for $2-3 per coin. Cleaned, they would only have 2-3x the value. There's not much risk if I make mistakes — and they feed my curiosity. A book that kept mentioning an Antoninus Pius sestertius sucked me into this rabbit hole. lol
