My own experience is the opposite of this. I feel like I would have been a significantly worse person without the influence of EA ideology. https://twitter.com/nickcammarata/status/1725958636529480155

So where has it gone wrong in your eyes? The message is nice, but in practice it doesn’t seem to work. Might be human nature à la socialism. They were happy to take money from someone (iirc they knew?) who was fraudulent under SBF, and are meddling where they don’t belong at OpenAI.

I don't ever recall getting messages from EAs or EA literature that encouraged me to cut ethical/deontological corners to try to maximize utility. Possibly a difference between the vibez that spread over the internet (which is what I absorbed) and in-person stuff I was not privy to?

In the case of SBF, he made it clear in private that his public stance on ethics was a shibboleth used to please woke westerners and attract investment. He had a mental 2x2 matrix of clean/shady and win/lose, and anything other than shady ∩ lose was acceptable to him.
