I started taking photos in 1995 because I had to take an art class in high school. My mom was a photographer so I had a camera. I got a C in my Photo 1 class cause we had to take photos of still lives and shit and I hated the darkroom. But in Photo 2 I got to take photos of my actual life and I never put down a camera.

I dedicated my first book to her. I always knew I would. I hadn’t talked to her since I graduated but I was gonna look her up when I published my first book. But when I did I found out she had died in Chicago where I happened to be on the last week of shooting for that book. I ended up giving a copy to her daughter who was my prom date.

Yeah it was a real regret. Never told her how much of an impact she made on my life. She used to work at the Chicago Art Institute and she showed them my work and they recruited me like I was a star athlete but for some reason I didn’t want to go to art school. Two years later I dropped out of college and went to (a much worse) art school.
