telegram isn't perfect and mostly isn't e2e encrypted - we get it (everyone remotely smart about this stuff has known this forever). doesn't mean durov deserves life in prison. doesn't mean TG isn't a powerful anti-authoritarian tool. perfect enemy of good.

Well, also that he drove people away from Signal through spreading FUD. That's crosses the line from "I'm doing my own thing the best I can" to "I'm making the world worse through my own lies and dishonesty"

exactly. if tg is mostly unencrypted, then those messages live somewhere, and will be vulnerable to hackers or law enforcement. not saying durov should be arrested, but i think its a stretch to deem him a hero. they could have easily deployed e2ee to all of tg but didnt, and spread fud about an e2ee messenger. now everyone who thought they had privacy on tg is vulnerable, regardless of durovs intentions.
