if your consumer app doesn't make the user money, doesn't give users status & you don't have existing distribution, it's going to take a while, and you may still fail.

Some apps that solved a non-status and non-monetary problem and got really big: Facebook, Tinder, Snapchat, Quizlet, Dropbox, Spotify, Netflix, Gmail

I think all the exceptions exist in the category of messaging/personal social. Snapchat before stories and more recently BeReal come to mind
