I’m judging them compared to their peers. 

But it’s okay if other people still like them. I didn’t realize The Doors had such ardent supporters.

They were very cool quite high people, who wrote a handful of timeless songs. 

But not as many as the Bee Gees, for example.

Not a diehard doors fan, but read the chat and think it’s important to point out that it’s to appreciate music in its temporal context

Skill competition means a YT channel with “mediocre” musicianship today is probably top decile guitar/whatever skill even just 20 years ago

In the Doors case, they really were innovative in 1965, but obv feels less so now

I stand by this judgement. I used to appreciate them, but a song came on today and my immediate thought was “this song writing is kind of flat and the playing is kinda uninspired - but Jim’s vocals are good even though his lyrics are kinda high school-y”

The Doors were important & innovative—blending blues, jazz, and classical into rock & roll. Ray Manzarek’s was classically trained. Mediocre‽ really
