Can someone explain to me why we need more meme coins?

Same question was probably asked about crypto punks when they were made into NFTs. What is the value of ownership of a digital thing that can be duplicated infinitely? There’s value in the community, in being on the ledger, in flexing how much you have of a meme. It’s proof of concept in the value of shared appreciation of things— even silly things.

Let’s say you and I share a laugh about a line from Caddyshack. We aren’t the only ones who appreciated that line. There are people all over the world who will share that laugh with us. If we make a memecoin out of it, that appreciation is something we can monetize share buy sell swap for other things we value. Its value is that we all like it and it makes us smile together. Future generations will smile at it too when we share it with them or they discover it. One unit may be worth one one-millionth of a cent, but it has value.

So it's basically a "like" button which you toss money at.

Building in decentralized identity for 7 years I see it much deeper. Those likes are onchain and part of your identity. When used properly it unlocks so much potential across connected applications

Exactly. You like food? If you monetize the liking, you can actually buy food. Someone "likes" it more? They buy the food with likes and you don't. How much do you like food now that you're hungry? Better acquire some more likes so you can spend it on food too.
