When I lived in Germany I never noticed a tea emphasis as beer overpowered the conversations for obvious reasons.

Yes, the strong tea culture is only at the coast (east Frisia, maybe Hamburg).

I was just there for 2 years, 1.5 in Graff and hoensfels then Iraq 

But I got a good 6 months of enjoying the non vacation tourist side of Germany.

We want to go back for Christmas soon... I loved it there in Frankfurt
