You’ve laid out reasons for why people may want to build an L2 vs for e.g. and L1, but not for why these chains would be used? Why use/develop apps for the 20th general purpose L2, when base for e.g. already has the network effects of liquidity/users/apps/brand recognition etc.?

GM dc I tend to agree with this thesis, abstraction/evolution will eventually render the chain imperceptible to the user. How do you feel about L3s

It's all very tiring. Big wins for infra companies, everyone else loses. But the economics are clear, as long as selling blockspace is the best business model, then it'll be a common one as well

Today we've got the big players like Base and Arbitrum, plus niche chains like Blast and ImmutableX. But here's the real kicker: 'modular L2s' are coming. Think LEGO for blockchains - mix and match settlement, data, and execution. Devs are gonna have a field day customizing chains for their exact needs. The future's looking stackable...

Thousands of new decentralized L2s just to abstract the complexity of needing to bridge tokens to each of them to interact with away under a centralized Alchemy/Infura/whatever account. Way to go, full round trip!

I’d think general purpose L2s wouldn’t increase in the long term. I see regular users converging in L2s with a moat such as high throughput (MegaETH) or easy onboarding (Base). That said, web2 businesses & apps will have clear incentives to want to connect to Ethereum L1 liquidity so app-chains will rise.

Where is it gonna end with the L2s? I feel like I'm unknotting christmas lights.

Makes sense. But what kind of app would want to be an L2 on its own instead of an L3? Apart from huge financialised apps like Uni or Aave, what use cases would need that ”surplus securityβ€œ when compared to an L3?

That's an interesting assessment! I agree that we will definitely see a lot more L2 solutions emerging in the space. Looking forward to seeing how they evolve and impact the overall ecosystem. Thanks for sharing!
