i have a lot of feelings but i'm on no sleep and since i'm casting in this channel i'll keep it on topic: i've been posting more doomer content lately even tho i'd rather focus on good things. but now i expect the enshittification of the web to accelerate. the democrats aren't really better for the web but they are less distracting. when the firehose of trump's shitshow turns on again in january, many will be too distracted daily like last time to do productive things to prevent further enshittifying. it's no coincidence the death date of the internet is often cited as 2016/2017. now he has elon as a sidekick too, so it will be doubly as annoying ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ not sure what that means for this channel. "A channel for Very Internet Persons to discuss net culture, intermedia, and having fun online." seems frivolous now as i'm not sure online will be very fun for a while and i'll have to spend more time offline working to insulate my loved ones from the "hardship" that elon is promising. i hope i'm wrong tho

Clarify what you mean when you say Trump in power would result in more enshittification? Not sure how those are connected.

i'm using enshittification here in more of a general sense of the effects doctorow's enshittification is about platform lock-in and the decay of quality/usability. eg. social app or search engine pivots to algo slop to better profit, degrading user's ability to see/do what they want obv the web is not a platform in this sense. but trump in power combined with his extreme attention seeking causes an ai slop-like effect on the web "flooding the zone with shit" as bannon himself called it. the goal of this strat is to bait, hook, and wear ppl out (ie. enshittification pattern.) drown out everything else. i think one overdominating and unrelenting annoying slop noise decays the quality of the web. the way to counter this decay is lots of ppl actively adding more good to the web. ofc i can upload whenever i want but, like ig, what's the point if it's just drowned out by shein ads and shrimp jesus and my friends can't see it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ sry if this is disconnected. i still haven't slept and i'm out of space

I think information wars are gonna be a fact of life from now on regardless of who’s in office 😅 but fortunately the web3 internet is looking bright and we’re due to have some incredibly powerful cryptographic primitives at our disposal to help navigate this. The web is a huge place and it’s still ultimately up to us to decide what we pay attention to. All the more we need passionate people like you to curate cozy corners and keep the nostalgia alive and well. Sleep tight 🙂

yeah information warfare is the normal state of things ÂŻ\_(ツ)_/ÂŻ i'm basically just saying that trump and elon are expert air-suckers. bc they are now effectively the most powerful man and richest man power couple, all attention will be fixated on what they do and it will be inescapable on the web. they will take advantage of ppl's attention bc that's how they control ppl there are lots of annoying and terrible things about biden but at least i didn't have to see or hear him every single day and that gave me some space to think and dream. unlike with trump last time around and probably this time too (â•„_â•„) i had to leave the web for trump's previous 4 years bc it was so annoying and i still had to hear about him every day! (that's why i was still using jquery when i came back in 2020/21 (àč‘>ᮗ<àč‘))

Network effects gonna network effect. I personally don’t mind hearing what those two will be up to, but the level of information intake is definitely gonna be a balance all of us will have to figure out 😛

i just woke up and realized i left out a more specific concern in my response: trump has a pattern of nepotism, threatening to shut down unfavorable media, and promoting things that butter him up (see trump silos like newsmax and truth – his own versions of things that weren't nice to him) elon says he wants x to become the everything app of america like wechat in china, creating a single point of access to the internet for the majority of ppl. but also in daily life, like paying for things. convenient but locked-in dependence i think trump in power is the best chance elon has to create this super app and the way to do it is to sell the president on it as a trump zone flooder this would be the ultimate enshittocene. users locked into an app bc they depend on it for daily existence. a government sponsored black box where users can be data harvested and manipulated with filtered slop. this would become the sole internet for many ppl and that would be a shame idk, i'm just going on what they've done/said

You’re giving Trump and Elon too much credit haha – they aren’t THAT influential in the grand scheme of things 😜 I’d argue Elon actually deshittified Twitter to a great extent by rooting out all the special interests and declassifying all the censorship activity that was happening before (see the Twitter Files). Of course you’d expect Trump to speak out against constant outright defamation from mainstream media, but I wouldn’t extrapolate that so far to insinuate he’d participate in censorship himself and somehow collude with Elon to turn X into a monopoly. Even if he did somehow have the power to snap all the media conglomerates out of existence it would be incredibly bad for competition and contradict a lot of his stated economic policies. More likely, X will have to face competition from incumbents in every new vertical it enters on its way to becoming a super-app, just the same as every other company. There will always be plenty of internet left to escape to if people don’t like it.

true, i don't think trump is competent enough but the one-side tech money powering this new presidency gives me pause (musk, vance, thiel, & co) bc wechat exists, i can imagine it existing here. to be fair, many ppl don't have issue using wechat (even tho some thing they send me magically don't make it.) all it would take to start rolling is giving musk a spacex-like contract to outsource government payments to x in the name of "government efficiency" i think we'll have to disagree on the other points. i just find it odd ppl work hard to excuse trump & co from things they complain about the other side doing. parag twitter was bad and elon x is bad (ie. hunter laptop vs vance dossier – just different flavored censorship) dems self-deal, trump self-deals, as evidenced in his many cases and convictions i think it's ok to say both are bad. so all that's left is who do i feel my family and friends are safer under and i have to choose the one who is not openly disparaging women, minorities, immigrants, etc.

I can’t really speak to all the points you mentioned, but I suppose I can see why it might be overwhelming to hear about these people if you’re reading between the lines and projecting the worst dystopian scenario possible 😔 There are no perfect leaders, but on the net I think this new administration best aligns with the interests of the country and choose to remain optimistic that they will deliver accordingly. But if you’d still rather take another four years off to write jQuery in a cave, I’d be happy to support you đŸ«‚

i don't even think wechat is dystopian ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ like i said, it's very convenient and "efficient" but it's a type of highly mediated centralized internet that i don't want even more woven into my life if musk wasn't such a primary player in all this, i wouldn't be as concerned. but it's expected he will have a role in this cabinet. and we know that musk always does what he says. so when he says he wants x to be the everything app, he's going to make it happen i just try to have practical skepticism and base scenarios on previous history/performance and things they have stated or telegraphed

i'll just leave this here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chilling_effect i'd say his concept/plan sounds like a variation of the playbook that allowed wechat to become what it is (ie. blocking/punishing apps that don't follow weird subjective/undefiniable rules of the state allowing a state favored super app to rise) he's just selling a magic bean flavored in "american values" to ppl who somehow feel victimized in a world where the 7 out of the top 10 podcasts on spotify freely share their views, somehow bypassing the "deep state censorship machine" he mentioned but he says a lot of things. it's been more than 24hrs since he won and the ukraine war isn't done like he promised so already off to a bad start on keeping his word (⌒_⌒;)
