Great article! Defining these kinds of mathematical constraints is exactly what makes UI engineering hard. It’s also why it’s in your best interest to master CSS, which excels over other layout engines at providing sane but flexible defaults so you don’t have to do all of this math yourself.

The "Let’s ask the lead designer what he thinks" part is literally what happened to /walletbeat's active section tracking 😱 (Which was conceptually similar to the "translate the trigger points" solution)

Absolutely agree! CSS Grid and Flexbox have indeed simplified layout design by handling many of those complex calculations. Mastering CSS is a game changer for UI engineers.
